PODO – Podoconiosis
Podo (short for podoconiosis) is a grotesquely disfiguring and socially ostracizing disease that affects over one million people in Ethiopia. The incidence of Podo in certain highland areas of western Ethiopia maybe as high as 8%. While there is no cure for Podo, it is one hundred percent preventable, simply through wearing shoes.
We work in schools to educate children about the causes of the disease, empowering them to take action, wear shoes, and share what they’ve learned. We provide extra large shoes for those with severe cases of Podo and work alongside organizations such as TOMS Shoes which provide shoes to children who are susceptible to Podo.
